Chlorophyll is the molecule that traps sunlight and transforms energy through photosynthesis. It also gives plants their green color. Plants use chlorophyll and light to make food. Green plants and algae are high in chlorophyll, for example:
– wheatgrass (70% chlorophyll)
– spinach (23.7 mg in 1 cup raw)
– chard & collards
– sea dulse
– peas, broccoli, asparagus, grapes, celery
– chlorella (green superfood powder or tablets)
Why try to eat so much chlorophyll, anyways? Dark leafy greens (chlorophyll) are shown in research and through anecdotal evidence to have amazing health benefits.
1. BUILDING YOUR BLOOD.
For those people with low iron or blood levels, this is for you. A study in 2004 about wheat grass juice (WGJ) being used as therapy to people with thalassemia, a blood disorder, showed that the group with WGJ therapy needed less blood transfused less often than the group without it during the study. You can find that study here or look at the screenshots below of the results: https://www.indianpediatrics.net/june2005/618.pdf
2. INCREASE YOUR GREENS INTAKE
Greens and veggies are important for your digestion by giving you tons of fiber. They are also full of antioxidants with anti-aging properties and are of a alkaline nature, balancing your body’s pH to a healthier level. I try to eat a lot of greens for my health and to get as much iron from them as I can.
3. WEIGHT LOSS
If you have extra weight you want to lose, adding greens to your diet can help you do that by giving you the nutrients with less calories. This helps keep you fuller longer between meals. If it’s hard for you to eat greens, try taking supplements. I would recommend still trying to find a green or vegetable that you can eat and eat that as often as possible to work it into your daily diet! Did you know it takes 2 weeks for your taste buds to change and 21 days to change a habit?
4. CANCER FIGHTING + DETOXIFYING PROPERTIES
Chlorophyll, especially taken purely through water or tablet form, is shown to have detoxification properties. One study on animals receiving chlorophyll showed reduction in stomach and liver tumors by 24-64%. You can find that study here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3486520/
People that take detoxifying foods in high amounts may experience purging like diarrhea, or discolored poop. This is just the body cleaning its digestive system out. If you want to start taking liquid chlorophyll, I would advise starting with 1 tbsp per 2 cups to start and working your way up from there.
5. REDUCE INFLAMMATION
This means better skin, calmed nerves, and faster wound healing. For those that work out, you can supplement with chlorophyll or drink it when you work out (I have) to help muscle recovery.
You can consume chlorophyll…
– naturally, by eating leafy greens daily
– taking wheatgrass shots, as wheatgrass has the most chlorophyll content of all foods
– adding chlorophyll to your water or smoothies
– taking chlorophyll tablets
I got my liquid chlorophyll at my local health food store, the Sac food coop. They had A LOT for $15 compared to a small tincture bottle for the same price, so I got this one. It has lasted me so long and I’m saving way more money than getting chlorophyll water from a juicery like Liquidology. I can also drink it anytime I’m home.

I like to get my chlorophyll naturally by trying to eat greens everyday, sometimes I don’t get more than one serving a day. The reason I personally like to consume liquid chlorophyll water other than the health benefits is because I love the flavor and it makes me feel really good when I drink it. I would compare it to a vitamin water minus the sugar and add the greens. More like a really subtle tea. It’s not super pungent and you can add more or less to your liking.
I hope you got something positive from this post to take into your life.
Much love, x
